Vermont is famous for its great skiing and riding. There are world class ski resorts, Nordic ski areas and statewide interconnected back country ski trails.
You can cross country ski or snowshoe on Vermont State and Federal lands. State Parks and forest roads are popular choices. Most hiking maps can be used for skiing and snowshoeing maps.
Vermont is also lucky to have the Catamount Trail which is a backcountry ski trail that traverses the length of the state.

The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation welcomes backcountry skiing. We are actively working with our partners, including the Vermont Backcountry Alliance, to create ethics and guidelines for management.
Backcountry skiing is generally allowed on state lands but no unauthorized cutting of vegetation is permitted. Back country skiing may be restricted in certain areas due to potential effects on wildlife, impact on vegetation or public safety concerns.
