Annual Ice Fishing Festival

Vermont Fish & Wildlife is hosting the annual Ice Fishing Festival that is open to all members of the public, young and old, interested in learning how to ice fish.

The event will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 and anyone, resident or nonresident, may go fishing in Vermont without a fishing license.

Event Schedule:

  • 11:00 am - Registration Opens
  • 11:00 am to 3:00 pm - Fun Family Activities This year, Fish & Wildlife staff and Let's Go Fishing volunteers will help new ice anglers learn the basics of winter ice fishing with stations including:
    • Ice Fishing Gear Explained
    • Hole Drilling Demos
    • Tip-up Techniques
    • Using a Rod and Jig
    • Ice Safety
    • Fish Identification and Regulations Explained
    • Knot-tying Know-how and tackle craft

Enjoy a fish fry and cocoa (bring your own mug if you can)! Warming huts will be available to keep you comfortable.

Bring your own ice fishing equipment or you can borrow ours.

First Day Hikes - Groton Nature Center

Join us for one of three guided, family friendly hikes this New Year's Day at Groton Nature Center at 1:00 p.m.

Join Groton State Forest expert, Greg Western for a family-friendly 1+ hour loop hike, all ages. Snowshoes or microspikes are recommended, pets permitted on leash.

Meet at the Groton Nature Center (plowed parking). For more information and go/no go updates call Greg at 802-498-0079.

First Day Hikes - Lake Willoughby Area

Join us for one of three guided, family friendly hikes this New Year's Day within the Lake Willoughby Area at 10:00 a.m.

Join us for this First Day Hike in memory of Dave Hardy, who dedicated countless hours to the stewardship of the Long Trail in Vermont. This hike has beautiful overviews of Long Pond, Lake Willoughby and Bald Mountain and is considered moderate with a few tricky areas. Snowshoes or microspikes will be need for this 4-mile round trip. All ages, pets permitted on leash.

Meet at Long Pond trailhead 10:00 a.m. (From RT 5A in Westmore, turn onto Long Pond Road at the Westmore store, continue up for 2.5 miles, go past Long Pond for about 1/8 mile, parking is on the left at the Long Pond Trail parking area).

First Day Hikes - Mt. Ascuntney

Join us for one of three guided, family friendly hikes this New Year's Day on Mt. Ascuntney at 9:00 a.m.

Easy-moderate hiking, approximately 2 - 2 1/2 hrs. All ages welcome. Trail depends on conditions. Pets on leash welcome.  Meet at entrance to Mt. Ascutney State Park. For more information and go/no go status, contact Scott Davison at 802-457-2810. Dress in layers, bring water and snacks. Microspikes or snowshoes recommended.
