Marsh Brook Explorers

Marsh Brook Explorers: (Meet at Nature Center). An aquatic catch and release adventure in the Marsh brook near the entrance to the Nature & Field trails. Learn how to find and capture aquatic macro-invertebrates, crayfish, amphibians, and small brook fish to observe. Try to catch and observe as much variety as possible in an observation container until it is time to release them back to Marsh brook to let them do what they do best.

Sunset on the Lake (Kayak tour)

Sunset on the Lake: Sign up at the Contact Station (main office), then meet at the day use beach for a guided tour on a kayak along the state forest shore to witness wondrous wildlife (Bald Eagles, Osprey, Kingfishers, Great Blue Herons, etc.) and learn more about the lake and park histories. Program may be canceled in inclement weather & dependent on rental boat availability.

Landscape Literacy & Forest Forensics

Landscape Literacy (Forest Forensics): (Meet at Nature Center). Take a guided tour along the Stone wall & Marsh Brook paths on the Field Trail. Learn about Carmi’s long history of its ecosystem and human impacts from the prehistoric tribes to European settlement by the Marsh family and the many farms that followed, and finally to its transformation into the state park we know and love. Full tour starts at the Nature Center and ends at the stone wall above the Contact Station, based on the present participants’ preference.

Walk Around the Top at Mt Ascutney State Park

 

Views and more views! Starting from the parking lot at the top of the road, we’ll look for breezes and hike to Castle Rock, Brownsville Rock, the Observation Tower, the hang glider platform, West Peak, and back to the start.  Diverse forestation, geology, and habitats.  Special places with great views in every direction, with a chance to see the launch and soaring of a hang glider.  We’ll talk about each  trail that comes up to the summit, as possibilities for your future big adventure.  2+ miles.  Moderate difficulty.   Meet at the top parking lot at 9:30 am.  FREE entrance to the park.
