Keepers of the Earth with Michael Caduto at Coolidge State Park

Popular author and master storyteller Michael Caduto performs Native American myths and legends at Coolidge State Park on Thursday June 27 at 4:00pm. This performance uses song, chants, native instruments, dance and stories that are carefully chosen from among the indigenous cultures found throughout North America. Caduto’s lively performance engages the audience with a cast of humorous and dramatic characters and voices that share the theme of wise environmental stewardship. During this presentation participants are introduced to, and actively involved in, the great circles of life — the traditional Native American basis for a balanced, sustainable existence with Earth.

ABOUT THE PERFORMER:  Michael J. Caduto is known for his entertaining, dynamic presentations of science, storytelling, song and stewardship. His popular books include the KEEPERS OF THE EARTH® series, EARTH TALES FROM AROUND THE WORLD and CATCH THE WIND, HARNESS THE SUN: 22 SUPER-CHARGED SCIENCE PROJECTS FOR KIDS (Teacher’s Choice Award), and THE GARDEN OF WISDOM: EARTH TALES FROM THE MIDDLE EAST. His other awards include the Aesop Prize, NAPPA Gold Award, Storytelling World Honor Award, New England Environmental Educator Award and New York State Art & Literary Award. In 1984 he founded P.E.A.C.E®—Programs for Environmental Awareness & Cultural Exchange—to promote Earth Stewardship and cultural diversity. He has traveled throughout North America, Europe and the Middle East presenting performances, workshops and keynotes to more than 500,000 people.

Words in the Woods with Major Jackson

Our seasonal “Words in the Woods” program allows Vermonters and visitors to enjoy our state’s natural beauty while listening to and reading literature in the outdoors.

This year, we look forward to joining five Vermont poets in-person at different Vermont State Parks. Join us in celebrating our 50th anniversary and the 100th anniversary of Vermont State Parks by registering for a program today!

Thank you for the support of the Vermont Humanities and the Vermont Arts Council.

Join us for a morning of poetry with Major Jackson. Vermont Humanities will cover the entry fee for the park, so feel free to explore the wilderness after the event.

Major Jackson is the author of six books of poetry, including Leaving Saturn (2002), which won the Cave Canem Poetry Prize for a first book of poems. He has been awarded a Pushcart Prize, a Whiting Writers’ Award, and has been honored by the Pew Fellowship in the Arts and the Witter Bynner Foundation in conjunction with the Library of Congress. He has published poems and essays in American Poetry Review, The New Yorker, Orion Magazine, Paris Review, Ploughshares, Poetry, Poetry London, and World Literature Today.
