Public Invited to Shape the Future of the Hamilton Falls Natural Area
Montpelier, VT- The Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation (FPR) has embarked on an initiative to sustainably manage the growing popularity of Hamilton Falls Natural Area (HMNA), a treasured gem in southern Vermont. FPR has engaged a civil engineering firm, Vanasse Hange Brustlin, Inc. (VHB), to develop a comprehensive master plan for the site, balancing preservation with recreational access.
“Hamilton Falls is an incredible asset, known for its exceptional water quality and incredible beauty,” says Jim Duncan, State Lands Manager. “This master plan is an important step in preserving its splendor for future generations to come.”
The public is invited to an informational meeting on July 18, 2024, from 6:00 –7:30 PM at the Windham Meeting House at to learn about the three conceptual designs to improve overall management of the HMNA, each containing unique site development options that would enable a range of use intensities. Each design includes strategies to manage use levels according to the designed capacity.
“Public feedback from this meeting will help guide the selection of a design for further development,” says FPR Stewardship Forester, Tim Morton. “This planning process will enable us to develop the site responsibly and have a plan in place when visitation exceeds capacity.
Hamilton Falls, nestled in Jamaica State Park, has seen a surge in visitors in recent years leading to erosion, safety concerns, lack of parking, and impacts to local residents. The master plan aims to address these challenges through thoughtful design and management strategies.
The public is encouraged to attend the informational meeting on July 18, 2024, from 6:00 – 7:30 PM at the Windham Meeting House, 26 Harrington Rd, Windham, VT 05359.
