The Departments of Forests, Parks, and Recreation and Fish and Wildlife Announce Water Quality Project

A recently completed forest road stabilization and soil erosion control project in the Turner Hill Wildlife Management Area in Athens, Vermont will improve water quality and restore forested wetlands in the Saxtons River watershed. Approximately three miles of forest road were improved with water diversion devices and graded to disperse rain and spring run-off. Additionally, six outdated wetland-crossing structures were removed and the hydrologic functions restored.

Turner Hill WMA was recently purchased by the Fish and Wildlife Department for wetland and upland habitat protection and encompasses about 1,052 acres in Athens and Grafton.

This important work was funded through the Ecosystem Restoration Grant Program administered by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation.
