General Description:

Otter Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is located along the Mount Tabor-Danby town line in southern Rutland County. The terrain of the WMA is typical of the western foothills of the Green Mountains, ranging from relatively flat fields to extremely steep, rough, rocky land. Otter Creek runs along the western boundary of the WMA.

Unique Features:

Deer wintering habitat covers a portion of the WMA and its management includes commercial timber and firewood sales to release softwood cover, establish openings and create browse. The wetlands associated with Otter Creek is significant and provides important habitat for a wide variety of waterfowl, amphibians and reptiles.

Recreation Overview:

The dominant recreational uses of the WMA include dispersed fish and wildlife-based activities including hunting, fishing and trapping. Wildlife viewing, hiking and snowshoeing are also popular. Hunting for deer, turkey, grouse and woodcock are common. Within the WMA, Otter Creek provides a good cold water fishery with brook, brown and rainbow trout, along with occasional bass or northern pike.

Planning Overview:

The long-range management plan for Otter Creek Wildlife Management Area was developed in 1987.
