There are many reasons to celebrate our trees and forests: Trees are part of the green infrastructure of our cities, towns, and villages; they provide so many environmental and health-related benefits; they provide shade and create recreational opportunities in public spaces, plus they are simply beautiful! Every May we celebrate Arbor Day alongside those cities, campuses, and utility companies designated annually through the Arbor Day Foundation's Tree City USA, Tree Campus USA, and Tree Line USA programs. During the Arbor Day Conference in the spring, we celebrate Vermont Tree Steward Awards, where we recognize individuals and volunteer groups from all over the state who are Vermont tree champions. Further, towns engaged in efforts to expand the value and benefits of public open spaces are recognized through the Vermont Public Space Awards. We also recognize the largest specimens in Vermont through the Vermont Big Trees Program and promote and celebrate village greens and town forests through collaborative projects with partners.
